![]() ![]() Some synthetic oils are able to achieve this variation without additives. To be able to change the viscosity index, conventional oils incorporate additives, usually plastic polymers. Thus, the viscosity index measures the ability of an engine oil to resist becoming thinner at high temperatures. The viscosity changes with temperature to ensure protection and operability under all circumstances. A higher viscosity implies a slower flow and a thicker fluid. Viscosity is simply the resistance of a fluid to flow. The increase in viscosity for sucrose solutions is particularly dramatic, and explains in part the common experience of sugar water being "sticky".After a brief review of the use of engine oil, we will now move on to one of the most important concepts: oil viscosity index. For instance, the table below shows that viscosity increases monotonically with concentration for sodium chloride and calcium chloride, but decreases for potassium iodide and cesium chloride (the latter up to 30% mass percentage, after which viscosity increases). ![]() The viscosity of an aqueous solution can either increase or decrease with concentration depending on the solute and the range of concentration. This is also the reason oils tend to be highly viscous, since they are usually composed of long-chain hydrocarbons. More dramatically, a long-chain hydrocarbon like squalene (C 30H 62) has a viscosity an order of magnitude larger than the shorter n-alkanes (roughly 31 mPa This effect can be observed for the n-alkanes and 1-chloroalkanes tabulated below. Substances composed of longer molecules tend to have larger viscosities due to the increased contact of molecules across layers of flow. One of the key predictions of the theory is the following relationship between viscosity μ For this reason, measured viscosities of the noble gases serve as important tests of the kinetic-molecular theory of transport processes in gases (see Chapman–Enskog theory). The simple structure of noble gas molecules makes them amenable to accurate theoretical treatment. By contrast, pressure is omitted since gaseous viscosity depends only weakly on it. The temperatures corresponding to each data point are stated explicitly. Where data points are unavailable for 25 ☌ or 1 atmosphere, values are given at a nearby temperature/pressure. Here "standard conditions" refers to temperatures of 25 ☌ and pressures of 1 atmosphere. Viscosities at or near standard conditions Consequently, its kinematic viscosity is around 2 to 40 centiStokes. The density is usually on the order of 0.5 to 5 kg/m^3. The values listed in this article are representative estimates only, as they do not account for measurement uncertainties, variability in material definitions, or non-Newtonian behavior. Of all fluids, gases have the lowest viscosities, and thick liquids have the highest. Viscosity is measured using a viscometer. For instance, honey hasĪ much higher viscosity than water. It corresponds roughly to the intuitive notion of a fluid's 'thickness'. Dynamic viscosity is a material property which describes the resistance of a fluid to shearing flows. ![]()

I think that the right marinade takes a steak from good to great as far as flavor and tenderness. Some people prefer minimal seasonings for steak I am a HUGE fan of a marinade. You’ll also need a meat thermometer to measure the internal temperature of your steak. This is a staple in my house, and I explain in this blog why it is an absolute kitchen necessity and why it is one of the best kitchen essentials you’ll ever buy. The key to a perfect pan-seared filet mignon is a good cast-iron skillet. What do I need in order to cook filet mignon at home? Once you attain the beautiful, golden-brown color on the outside, the steak can be finished off in the oven to reach the desired internal temperature of your steak. The purpose of searing a steak is to begin the cooking process on the outside of the steak. Why sear a steak before cooking it in the oven? A gas grill will not impart a smoky flavor, so I suggest using a pellet grill, a Big Green Egg, or a charcoal grill. If you prefer a smoky flavor, then I suggest using the grill toward the end of the cooking process. There are several ways to cook a filet, but one of the easiest and best ways to cook a filet is by first searing it on the stovetop and finishing it in the oven. What is the best method to cook filet mignon? Then cook the filet according to your preferred method. Secure the bacon to the steak with toothpicks. Sprinkle the bacon with a bit of sugar if you want it to caramelize and turn a lovely golden brown. When the bacon begins to render fat and lightly brown, remove it from the microwave. How to cook a bacon-wrapped filet mignon.įirst, partially cook the bacon in a microwave on a plate loosely covered with paper towels. If you wrap a thick piece of raw bacon around a steak, it may not cook fully before the steak itself is done. For best results, I like to partially cook the bacon before wrapping it around steak. Some recipes say to wrap a slice of thick smoked bacon around the steak, which adds flavor and moisture. Should I wrap bacon around a filet mignon? I let my steak sit at least 15 minutes before cutting into it. Always allow steak to rest for a few minutes before serving so the juices can redistribute themselves throughout the meat. Flipping the steak too many times will keep it from getting the golden sear. Keep each side of the steak on the heat until a good sear/crust develops. For the best browning, use a very hot skillet or grill. A cold piece of meat won’t cook as evenly as one that is closer to room temperature. After removing the steak from the fridge, let it stand at room temperature for 30 minutes before cooking. A dry surface with minimal seasonings will brown the best. To ensure a good sear, pat the steak dry before it hits the skillet or grill. Add dry seasonings (kosher salt, pepper, or special rubs) before searing so that they will infuse the steak with flavor when the steak hits the hot skillet or grill.

As we will see later, the veracity of this claim will come under intense scrutiny. Both men insisted that the exit door was easy to open and that it was entirely possible for Lowenstein to open it by accident. That conclusion was in great part based on the testimonies of Donald Drew (the pilot) and Robert Little ( the mechanic). An official inquiry, in which no one was under oath, concluded that Loewenstein’s death was accidental. The strangest thing about how the whole incident was handled is that there was little effort to get to the bottom of what had happened. However, a small amount of alcohol was detected in his blood, which is odd considering Alfred never drank. The examination found no signs that could indicate foul play or suicide. His widow Madeleine arranged a private autopsy to determine the cause of death. It was identified as the body of Alfred Loewenstein thanks to various clothing items. A fishing boat spotted a decomposed corpse floating near the French coast. The question of whether Loewenstein was actually dead was answered on July 19. ![]() They were at loss as to what actually happened, but they seemed to believe that their boss must have fallen to his death after accidentally opening the exit door. This beach was under the control of the French military so the pilot and Loewenstein’s employees were quickly apprehended by the authorities. The latter made a strange decision he decided to land on a deserted beach just outside of the city of Dunkirk instead of heading to a nearby airfield. Upon discovering that the compartment was empty, he notified the pilot, Donald Drew. Naturally, one of the employees went to check on Alfred when he failed to return to his seat. This compartment had two doors, a windowless one that separated it from the rest of the plane, and an exterior one that served as the sole mean of entrance and exit to the plane.Īlfred Loewenstein never made it out of this compartment, and that was the last time anyone had seen him alive. The weather was perfect and the flight was going as smoothly as planned. He was heading to his home country of Belgium, a routine trip that he made on a regular basis. On that day, Alfred and his employees boarded a private plane at Croydon Airport. The story begins on the evening of July 4, 1928. (This’ll help your toddler be a bit more tired at night.) If that goes well, trim another 15 off and slide bedtime 15 minutes earlier. If your toddler naps hard in the middle of the day and you’re hoping to shift some of that daytime sleep to the evening, start by shortening the afternoon nap by 15 minutes. Toddler Sleep Strategy #3: Adjust naptime. Research has shown that creating a predictable bedtime routine significantly reduces problematic sleep behaviors in toddlers. Make sure your toddler wakes up at the same time every morning and goes to sleep at the same time each evening. Toddler Sleep Strategy #2: Stick to a predictable schedule. While your toddler is outside, get moving! It’s recommended that toddlers clock at least three hours of running-around play a day because, for one, being active during the day has been shown to improve a child’s sleep quality at night. This helps to regulate your toddler’s sleep hormone, called melatonin, ensuring that your tot will be sleepy when bedtime rolls around. Toddler Sleep Strategy #1: Try these daytime tricks.ĭid you know that preparing for your toddler’s bedtime starts in the morning? It’s true! It’s important to get your toddler outside earl y in the day, exposing them to fresh air and natural outdoor light. One of the best strategies to start fixing your 2- to 3-year-old toddler’s bedtime issues is to work on their bedtime skills-all day long. No matter the reason your toddler won’t sleep, there are lots of ways to help them get the ZZZs they need. That means you may be putting your toddler to bed too early (so they’re not tired) or too late (and they’re overtired and wired). There is no standard one-size-fits-all bedtime for all toddlers. Reason Toddler Won’t Sleep #6: Their bedtime timing is off. Toddlers are also dealing with a smorgasbord of other worries-from strangers to dogs to thunder. ![]() They may get anxious when you turn the lights out and fear that there are monsters under the bed. It’s natural for toddlers to experience some difficulty being alone-especially at bedtime. Reason Toddler Won’t Sleep #5: They’re going through a fearful stage. So, they rely on things like you rocking them, feeding them, and holding them in order to go night-night. Some toddlers have never learned how to fall asleep on their own. Reason Toddler Won’t Sleep #4: They’re hooked on your help. They practically invented FOMO! So, toddlers simply don’t want to go to their bedroom because they want to see what everyone else is doing. Reason Toddler Won’t Sleep #3: They’re curious and strong-willed. Your tot may have a stuffy nose or maybe they’re agitated by itchy PJs. For instance, your toddler might be teething. It could be bright lights, loud noises, or discomfort. Reason Toddler Won’t Sleep #2: Something is bugging them. Toddlers can easily get wound up on TV, roughhousing, or thanks to something they’ve consumed, like sugary juice, sweet snacks, artificial colors and flavors, cold medicine, or a dose of caffeine from soda, iced tea, or chocolate. But before we can zero in on your toddler's bedtime solutions, let’s first zero in on why your toddler is resisting bedtime right now: Reason Toddler Won’t Sleep #1: They’re over-excited. Remember when your little one went to bed without a hitch and slept all night long in their own bed? Bliss! Well, I’ve got good news: That dream can come true all over again. Reasons Toddlers Refuse to Go to Bed and Sleep Through the Night Below are common reasons toddlers fight bedtime-how to help them get the sleep they need during these years. While this type of toddler defiance is natural, toddler bedtime can get better. In fact, one poll reported that a third of toddlers-and half of preschoolers-regularly stall at bedtime…and many downright fight it. And the more tired they get, the more rigid, hyper and irritable they become. The result: Toddlers get tired…really tired. They don’t hesitate to use their new go-to word at bedtime. The world is so exciting to them! At the same time, when your toddler reaches around 18 months they start to go through a very independent phase, where “No!” is their favorite word. They hate leaving the thrill of running, climbing, touching, and learning. Sound familiar? It turns out that many toddlers (aka your own personal Energizer Bunny) resist bedtime. When things are going well, tucking your toddler in at night is a pure pleasure-the I love yous, the kisses, the glorious ZZZs! But when toddler bedtime struggles arise-running after your little wild child, wrestling them into their PJs, shutting the bedroom door while they shriek on the other side-it’s only natural for parents to fear seeing the sun go down. ![]() ![]() In contrast the Fiordland earthquake on 15 July 2009 of magnitude 7.8, was given an intensity measurement of MM7 because it occurred in an isolated area and there was only a small amount of damage to buildings reported in Invercargill. The 1855 Wellington and 1931 Napier earthquakes were both MM10 at their epicentres. The scale quantifies the intensity of ground-shaking and destructiveness of an earthquake from MM1 (smallest) to MM12 (cataclysmic). Mercalli was an Italian seismologist (and priest) who developed his scale for measuring quakes in the early 20th century. The Modified Mercalli (MM) intensity scale is used for measuring the intensity of an earthquake. The 1855 Wellington earthquake had an estimated magnitude of 8.2, the Napier earthquake of 1931 was 7.8, and the recent Canterbury earthquake was of magnitude 7.1. The largest recorded earthquake was the 9.5 Chilean earthquake in 1960. It is a logarithmic scale, which means that a magnitude seven earthquake is 32 times as powerful as a magnitude six quake. The magnitude is a measure of the amount of energy released by the earthquake. ![]() The size of an earthquake is referred to as its Magnitude (although the Richter scale is often used interchangeably by the non-scientific community). The Richter scale has been superseded by the moment magnitude scale, which is calibrated to give generally similar values for medium-sized earthquakes (magnitudes between 3 and 7 on the Richter scale) but measures larger earthquakes with greater accuracy. Richter’s method worked well for small to moderate earthquakes, but the magnitudes of very large earthquakes were underestimated. The Richter scale was based on the largest amplitude recorded on a seismograph. In 1935 the American seismologist Charles Richter invented a scale to indicate the strength of an earthquake. Scientists from the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences (GNS) think it is the first time this fault has moved in several thousand years, and it is unlikely that it will move again for another few thousand years. The epicentre was 40 km west of Christchurch city close to the town of Darfield, at a depth of 10 km. It is a previously unknown fault under the Canterbury Plains. The fault that caused the Canterbury earthquake on 4 September 2010 has been named the Greendale Fault. The ‘S’ (secondary or shear) waves follow along at about 10,000 kilometers an hour, and cause the main rolling and shaking effects of an earthquake. The first sign of a quake is often the rumbling sound caused by the ‘P’ (primary or push) waves travelling at about 20,000 kilometers an hour. Earthquakes cause waves of vibration to travel though the ground. ![]() ![]() The point under the ground where the earthquake actually begins is called the hypocentre or focus, while the place directly above it on the surface is known as the epicentre. Most (though not all) earthquakes occur at faults, which are breaks extending deep within the earth, caused by the movement of these plates. Other areas, where the movement is not constant, are prone to stronger quakes separated by longer periods of time. In some places movement between the plates is happening all the time, causing frequent small or moderate earthquakes. Tension builds up as they scrape over, under or past each other. These plates are in constant motion, travelling at a few centimetres per year. There are ten major plates and many more minor ones. Tectonic plates are large plates of rock, about 100km in thickness, that make up the foundation of the earth's crust and the shape of the continents (like pieces of a giant jigsaw puzzle).
