Many Punks will dismiss the idea of Punk Lolita for it’s overall cute look.) It only takes certain influences from Punk while retaining the basics of Lolita fashion. (Note: This is a style of Lolita, not Punk. Punk Lolita, as the name would suggest, takes inspiration from Western Punk fashion. While most Lolita skirts are around knee-length, it is not uncommon for a Classic Lolita skirt to be closer to calf length. Classic Lolita is also the most popular style for longer than normal skirts. Common motifs that are seen in Classic Lolita include floral prints, candles, cherubs, cameos, and elegant animals such as birds and deer. Classic Lolita is most often seen with muted colors such as ivory, wine red, dusty rose, and brown. It also tends to use the A-line shape more than any other Lolita style but bell-shaped petticoats are still popular. It has the basic Lolita aesthetic with an emphasis on elegance and modesty. A more recent version of the OTT Sweet look adopts influences from Hime Lolita with a lot of detail coming from layers upon layers of ruffles and lace and has a bit of a more elegant feel while still being very cute and girly. While OTT Sweet is a more common style as of late, simpler looks for Sweet Lolita are not unknown and can still be seen.Ĭlassic Lolita tends to be the style that is most heavily influenced by the Victorian era. OTT Sweet often includes elaborate, pastel colored wigs which may be decked out in bows and smaller accessories. Common motifs include cupcakes and other pastries, fruits, cute animals, toys, and other cute childlike themes. In recent years Sweet Lolita has been a little more extravagant, including but not limited to the OTT Sweet Lolita that was mentioned previously. This style tends to get most of it’s detail from prints and accessories rather than lace and sewn details. What one may call "old-school” Sweet Lolita ( for example) would normally consist of a solid pastel color base with most of it’s details coming from lace and embroidery and often included things such as rectangular headdresses and tight sausage curls. Rocking Horse shoes were also very popular, much more popular than they are now although they are still worn from time to time throughout different Lolita styles. More than any other Lolita style, Sweet Lolita has changed a lot over the years. A Sweet Lolita coordinate that combines black with pastel colors is often referred to as “ Bittersweet“ but that is not it’s own style, contrary to popular belief. Darker colors however have been made to work into Sweet Lolita including red, navy blue, and even black. Colors are usually pastels including blue, pink, lavender, mint green, etc. Sweet Lolita is often the first style someone would learn of if they learned of Lolita through social media because for several years it has been the most popular of the Lolita styles, especially OTT (over-the-top) Sweet Lolita (although as trends change over time this is starting to become less true.) Starting with the same basic aesthetic as any other Lolita style, Sweet Lolita adds it’s own unique sweet and adorable flare to Lolita. Contrasting color schemes can often be seen in Gothic Lolita, such as the black and white color scheme that tends to be commonly associated with the style but should be used sparingly (see my FAQ for more details on this.) Gothic Lolita also uses many common Gothic motifs such as skulls, Gothic crosses, crowns, items of Gothic architecture such as fences and cathedrals, roses, etc. Gothic Lolita coordinates tend to be comprised of rich, dark colors including but not limited to black, navy, and burgundy. It retains the basic Lolita aesthetic of an overall modest look with the staple full, bell-shaped skirt (A-line skirts may be used but are less common). Gothic Lolita takes most of it’s Gothic influence from Victorian inspired Goth fashion. The real Gothic Lolita style tends to be a bit different from what you see in anime though as anime artists don’t always know the basic guidelines and what is considered Lolita and what is not. While we know that Lolita and anime have little to do with one another, many anime artists seem to be fans of the style so the “gothloli” look tends to catch on to the fans. Gothic Lolita is often the first style someone would be introduced to if they were to learn of Lolita through anime or manga or related conventions. Tophatcats!
